The Effects of Privatization on Industry Wages: a Study of Four Cases

Despite the growing importance of privatization in economic reform programs, little is known about its empirical effects on wages. Using individual-level data from Mexico, I estimate the effects of privatization on industry wages in four cases: the commercial airlines, Teléfonos de México, Siderúrgica Mexicana, and the commercial banks. I find that: (1) privatization is associated with statistically significant increases in industry wages in two cases and no change in two cases; (2) the private sector employed lessskilled workers, on average, than the public sector; and (3) deregulation that caused a loss of market power at deregulated firms may have decreased industry wages.
